The Writing life….

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

One of my favorite writing quotes is, “The difference between an amateur and a professional is persistence.”  And boy, am I living proof of that statement. I started writing later in life, tried every kind of writing and was published in all genres – except for poetry and memoirs, and then went on to try my hand at writing books. So far I’ve published nine novels and a non-fiction book but….I’m not finished yet!

Last week I signed the contract for book number 11! This will be my second book for Noble Romance (www.nobleromance.com) and it will be out the end of September. The title is LEGACY and it’s a paranormal romantic suspense novel. Here’s the blurb:

“When Jane Sullivan finds a mysterious envelope containing a birth certificate and a note telling her it’s time to claim her legacy and to look for the mark, she believes she’s finally found a clue to her true identity. With the help of investigative reporter, Tony Ackerman, Jane follows the clues and discovers her true legacy, and it’s not at all what she expected – it’s much, much worse.”

Now as you know – or maybe not, I’m a pantser, not a plotter. What does that mean? I don’t outline a book, I just get an idea, sit down and start writing. Sure, it may be harder this way but….to me it’s also more exciting. I never know what’s going to happen next! When I started LEGACY, it was going to be a novella, but somehow it grew and grew to over 70,000 words and turned into a novel.

So, what kind of writer are you? Maybe you’ve tried outlining and it didn’t work for you – or you try to write by the seat of your pants like me, and it’s not working. Tune in and let us know. This is a community of writers and we’re here to help one another.

Looking for something good to read? Pick up any one of my novels (the covers are going around in the carousel above) and check out my work – then let me know what you think.

Till next time – Happy Writing!

The Writing Life…

There are so many writing topics I want to talk about, it’s hard to know where to begin! However, I finished reading a book last night that had some egregious errors, and that gave me an idea for today’s topic. Fact checking!

You may think because you write fiction, you don’t have to do research or check facts, but if you use real cities, streets, people, cars….whatever, do be sure to get the facts right. It’s not that hard now that we have the Internet and believe me, if you get one tiny fact wrong, someone will notice. And if you’re lucky enough to get published, that someone will surly write and let you know you made a mistake. To me, if an author can’t take the time to make sure of all her facts, I’m suspect of everything she writes!

So what was the error that got me off on this rant? I read Damage Control by Robert Dugoni. (check out my mystery blog: www.themysterystartshere.com for a full review). Toward the end of the novel, Dugoni had one of his characters fly into La Jolla, California! I laughed out loud! If you’ve ever been to the San Diego area, you know that La Jolla is a small exclusive community located on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I lived in San Diego for 24 years so I know. So easy to check but so glaring an error. It made me wonder what other facts in the book were incorrect.

I read a book several years ago by one of my favorite authors, Joy Fielding. I can’t remember the title now, but in the book Fielding had her protagonist put bullets into the barrel of a .38 caliber pistol! I thought long and hard and finally wrote a polite to Ms. Fielding via her publisher to let her know that was a mistake. I was amazed when she wrote back. She thanked me and confessed she’d never even held a gun, nor had her editor. I’m sorry, but if you’re going to write mysteries you must learn how to use a gun! Learn police procedures and correct CSI protocol (don’t rely on the TV series!)

Another one I saw lately was a picky, I’ll admit, but it jumped out at me. The author named a character Mrs. Francis Uliberri. The female version of the name is Frances, not Francis and it’s easy to remember. HEr name is Frances – hIs name is Francis. As I said, it’s picky to me, but not to a woman named Frances!

Okay, end of lecture – go forth and sin no more! If you’ve found a particularly bad b00-boo in a book, leave a comment and share it. If you want to try and find errors in any of my books – go for it! I’m not perfect by any means. You can find all my titles in early blogs on this post or at: www.manicreaders.com/CarleneRaeDater

The Writing Life

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Okay, enough about my wonderful new life in Coos Bay, Oregon. I originally decided to start a blog to help other writers, to get dialogs going and to exchange ideas. So, with that in mind, I’m getting back to talking about writing.

When you decide to write a novel, there is one important question you need to ask yourself. Is this going to be a stand alone book or the beginning of a series? It makes a difference because if you’re planning a series, you might have some characters you’ll want to continue on with in the next book or books, so you might not want to reveal everything about him or her. All my books have been stand-alone novels but…I’ve left the door open to continue if I want to. For instance check out the blurb for my humorous novel, FINDER at http://deejulian.jimdo.com/blurb-party/ The book is complete as it is but if I ever feel like it, I can involve Sissy in another adventure. I have notes and ideas but haven’t gotten around to writing the book yet. Same thing with ROMAN CIRCUS, my humorous romantic suspense novel. Harmony Jane Jones runs away and joins the circus, has lots of fun and sometimes scary adventures and falls in love, so the story is complete, but once again, I’ve left the door open to continue on and make a series with Harmony, Sam and Midnight the Wonder dog as main characters. For into on ROMAN CIRCUS go to www.nobleromance.com

Why does it make a difference? Because series books are easier to sell. Agents and editors don’t buy books, they buy careers, so if you can go to them with ideas for a series and some basic outlines, you’ll be miles ahead. Besides, once you create the main characters, all you have to do is put them into different situations. Silly me – I have to create whole new worlds every time I write a book! Oh, well, that’s my process and what works for me, so for now, I’ll just keep writing a new book every year!

I’d love to get other’s opinions – what do you think?

I held a baby tiger today….

… and some lion cubs too! Does it sound fabulous? It was! Okay, here’s my story. There are two Wild Animal Parks in the area. One about two hours away, where the animals roam free and you drive through in your car. The other is a half hour south of here in Bandon – yes, the Bandon of many golf courses – and you walk thought that one. We had planned to visit both, but while in Bandon last week test driving our new RAV 4, I got into a conversation with a woman sitting next to us at lunch. Yeah, I know – I do that a lot. Anyhow, she and her family had just come from the Wild Animal Park and she told me that she got to hold tiger and lion cubs. She advised me to hurry because they usually take the babies off display in August.

We got to the park and it was both amazing and sad. Many of the animal, big animals, like lions tigers, bears, bison were all in cages. The cages were pretty good sized, but…I hate to see animals in cages of any size. Many of them were pacing, a sure sign of distress. While there were critters in cages, there were many roaming free, too. Deer, goats, peacocks, and mini-goats were wandering around free. They were all very friendly and looking for food. Of course, we had to buy some food and feed the obviously starving creatures. Yes, that’s a joke. I loved being so close to the deer! They nibbled gently at my fingers and let me pet their heads and stroke their velvety antlers.

The keepers brought out lion cubs to interact with the crowd. You had to line up and then only had a few minutes with the babies. We saw the lion cubs first, a male and female from the same litter, only six weeks old but boy did they have big feet! They were very feisty and vocal. There were some soft plush toys in the enclosure for the cubs to play with and I was amazed at how both of them went right for the throat of the toy animals! Talk about instinct. I waited my turn and then sat on the sawdust and got to cuddle the lions! There fur was soft and a little stiff and they had spots! I guess they remain when the lions become adults but are covered by fur. Too soon, I had to give up my place and leave.

We walk around, carefully – lots of loose animals trotting around, until the keepers brought out the tigers. There were three males from the same litter, and they were only four weeks old – yup, big feet too. They were more cuddly then the lions and wanted to rug their faces against yours. We were told not to pet their heads, nor let them lick our fingers. Hey, they’re babies they could get yucky human germs and get sick! I sat on the ground and the keeper piled all three boys on my lap. Boy, did I want to take them home, but of course, they grow up.

Altogether we spend a couple of hours at the park then headed back to Coos. When we got home Dukie ran over and started sniffing the front of my pants. He flopped back on his butt, looked up at me with the funniest expression on his face as if to say, “How could you?” then he continued to sniff and walk around me – I guess he thought maybe I had a tiger in my pocket!

So ended another wonderful Oregon adventure

Continuing Adventures in Coos Bay, Oregon!

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Another glorious sunny day in Coos! On Saturday morning, we walked the dogs then headed over the Empire area – a good five minutes away – to attend the annual Clamboree! It was held outdoors, of course, at a small park near where we rented a house when we first moved here. There were booths selling all kinds of interesting things as well as food stalls. The local culinary institute had a booth with freshly-made chowder, clam Po Boys, fried clams – all kinds of neat stuff. We wandered and enjoyed looking at the people as well as the displays. There was live entertainment – a woman strumming the guitar and singing. Mom always said it you can’t say something nice….so I’ll stop there. At one booth a big old boy covered in tattoos and was selling all kinds of calls – moose, duck, crow (?), bear – you name it. Well, Den did. He said we need a good call for dogs. We wandered into a booth with all kinds of beautiful blown glass items. Dennis bought me a lovely pendant with ….are you ready? Can you guess? Really? A frog! Surprising, I know.

Part of the Clamboree was held down by the water where there’s going to be a boat building facility. There were several boats, canoes and kayaks displayed that men had built by hand. Very interesting but COLD! The temperate was warm – about 66 degrees, but the wind! Oy. If I haven’t mentioned it yet, Coos Bay in the summer is WINDY! I’m not talking a stiff breeze here. Nope, the wind here will blow an elephant off the deck, no problem. But I digress. Full of food, empty of cash and chilly, we headed for home to get ready for the BIG OPEN HOUSE!

When we moved to our little loop on Telegraph Hill I knew right away I wanted to have an open house to meet all the neighbors. I sent an invitation to every house and a few to others I’ve met since we arrived – about 24 people in all. I did put down RSVP but well, you know how it goes. I only had two replies by last Wednesday and was thinking we’d have to start drinking all that wine – soon! We put out glasses and food relegated our dogs to the patio and…the clock had barely struck four when the doorbell rang and it didn’t stop ringing for an hour. Yup we had about 20 people here. The first couple had been to a wedding in Mingus Park. If you haven’t already – Goodle it. Mingus is one of the most beautiful parks I’ve even seen. We walk the dogs there most dogs and I can barely make it back up the hill in tennis shoes. Our first guest walked it in HEELS! Amazing

Everyone brought something – more wine, a plant (poor plant) candy, fruit, fresh baked bread. It was wonderful. Best of all we found we have a great bunch of people living around us! We all drank, nibbled and exchanged restaurant reviews, volunteer opportunities and other fun gossip. By seven, everyone had started to leave. They all thanked us for doing the open house and letting them SEE the inside of our house. No one had been in here before! So, a good time was had by all.

End of the adventure? Nope. Today was another fabulous sunny day so we took the pups to the dunes for a good run today then started off to do a couple of chores. Well, we found more places to explore, like the Cash and Carry store – just like Costco but smaller, WAY smaller. Went back to the True Value Hardware store (they have a fresh popcorn machine so the customers can munch while they shop) – Den’s new passion since there’s no Home Depot here. As we were heading alone the bay toward home we spotted the sign for fresh fish and FISH TACOS!!! Yes, a new little place opened under the boardwalk about a week ago. They sell not only fresh caught fish but also some cooked goodies. The place is literally a small houseboat on the water in the marina! (Don’t laugh – we have about 20 boats in our marina!!!) The place was packed with folks waiting for their orders! We each got a couple of fish tacos and sat on the boardwalk to eat them. DELICIOUS! Unfortunately I forgot – again – to bring a sweater and damn near froze my butt off. One of these days I’ll get it.

Till next time…. Don’t forget to check out one of my books! I’ve written something for everyone.

Another fun Oregon adventure

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

We got up this morning and decided to take the pups for a run on the sand dunes. It’s about a 10 minute ride. Both dogs go nuts when Dennis gets out the ramp (Tara has bad hips) and they’re raring to go! We got to the end of our driveway and….Tara curled up for a nap, Duke stuck his head out the window to let his ears flap for the remainder of the ride. On the way there, I commented to Dennis that I hadn’t seen any deer since the weather got nice. Someone must have been listening. We barely got out of the car, when I looked up near the top the highest dune (about a four story building high) and there stood two deer! They are so dainty and beautiful! The dogs didn’t see them – too far away. The deer gazed at us a bit, then slowly walked up to the top of the dune and disappeared. What a lovely way to start the day!

Dukie chased his ball until he was pooped. Tara explored with her black Frisbee hanging out of her mouth and we all had a good time. We drove him, did stuff, had a early lunch then headed up to Winchester Bay/Reedsport for the big chainsaw woodcarving show! The sun was shining, the breeze wasn’t too bad and it was in the low 60’s. Perfect!

It cost a big $2.00 to get in to the show (everything here is so much less expensive!) There were booths, food stalls and all around the perimeter, people set up with huge hunks of wood and everywhere there was sawdust! Now, today was day three of the show, so all the carvers had made a start on their projects.. Of course each carver had product to sell to the crowd. Some of it was extraordinary, some so-so, but  I sure couldn’t do it. We got a free ice cream bar from one of the local banks. Wandered and of course Dennis fell in love. It’s his birthday tomorrow so he bought himself a gift. It’s a three-foot high carved wooden moose holding a welcome sign. I guess we’re Oregonians now! We barely got the moose into our car when the carvers started up again, so we wandered and watched. It really was an amazing thing to see. The artists all had a variety of tools but basically used chainsaws. I just cannot imagine how they see a figure in a block of wood. Takes real talent. We watched for a while then headed out. On the way through Reedsport, we stopped to look in some of the local antique shows. I’m hooked on Antiques Road Show and just know one of these days I’ll find a treasure. Stop laughing. I actually did buy an old book with a pub date of 1898 for a dollar. It’s full of remedies for illness, recipes and all kinds of weird stuff. I’ll enjoy browsing through it next winter on cold rainy days.

So ended another wonderful Oregon adventure.

More Coos Adventures.

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Yesterday I awoke to find fog snuggled in the valley outside our windows. It was gorgeous, cottony white and wispy. Didn’t last long because the sun burst out and the sky was blue and gin-clear and it was warm. Ran around all day without a sweater! Ohhhh, Coos heat wave. We started out running errands and had to stop by the Coos Bay Library. The Friends of the Library were having a book sale! I was good, I only came out with one bag full – a big $4.75. The Friends has a sale nine times a year, so of course I joined and said I’d help. I’m not stupid – volunteers get first choice of books!

As we wandered through town, my husband, Dennis noticed that “To Catch a Thief” was playing at the Egyptian theater. Yes, the one filmed in 1955! Den asked if I wanted to go and of course I said yes. We hopped over to Luigi’s for a Garbage Grinder to go for dinner – yummy, burp. One thing I love about Coos is – you never have to worry about attire. It’s always, “Coos Casual.” We got to the theater at 6:50 – ten minutes before show time. Den asked the lady in the ticket booth how much tickets were and she said, “Seven dollars.” “Each?” he asked. Nope, seven dollars for both of us! We stopped at the concession stand for a BIG bag of popcorn and it cost – $2.00. It was so large we couldn’t even finish the bag! So, our Saturday evening date cost a big $9.00!!!

One of the volunteers got up on the stage before the beginning of the movie to give a little preview about what’s coming to the Egyptian. They have concerts, beauty pageants as well as other movies. He also mentioned that anyone who could spot Alfred Hitchcock during the movie would get a free ticket for the next event! The movie started and it was fun to watch, in spite of the fact that I remembered half way through who the bad guy was. Grace Kelly was so lovely and ….skinny! Oy.  And say what you will about Cary Grant, that man knew how to wear a tuxedo. We loved the scenes of the Riviera and marveled at all the rich folk who would dress for dinner in Tuxes and long gowns! Whatever happened to those days? So, the show ended at 9:00 and I went to the concession stand to see if anyone had claimed the free ticket ‘cause I sure saw Alfred! Well, pretty much everyone saw him so….we all got free tickets! We walked to the parking lot, drove home and arrived at 9:05. You gotta love living in a small town.

Today we had misty rain all day. We drove to Winchester Bay to join our RV-ing friends for lunch. Had seafood, of course, at a neat little restaurant on the bay. After lunch our friend, Paul, drove us to the Elk preserve but…no Elk! I guess they were staying dry under the trees. It was fun to see our friends again as we’ve known the couple for over 40 years.

Came home, snuggled with the puppies, read a while and took a wee nap. Another wonderful adventure in Coos Bay.

Roman Circus, my humorous romance is now out!!!

Monday, May 17th, 2010

When Harmony Jane Jones loses her cat, her car, her job and her boyfriend, all within the space of a week, she does what any twenty-something woman would do—she runs away and joins the circus. With finesse rather than a whip, Harmony takes charge of her life, finds a new career and possibly the man of her dreams.

Come along with Harmony, a tall curvaceous blond travels who travels to Oklahoma to help promote a local circus. She only has one little problem, okay, maybe two. She hates clowns, and she doesn’t have a clue how to promote the circus. Talk about on the job training. Sure, she worked with the world famous BEBOP, an ad agency in San Diego, so promoting a circus should be a snap, right? While traveling from town to town in her pink SUV, nicknamed the Pink Putter for its unfortunate habit of back-firing, Harmony survives a tornado, adopts an abandoned dog, rescues her brother from evil kidnappers and meets the man who might ultimately father her children.

Roman Circus is a humorous sweet romance that’s suitable for all audiences. Available row in e-book format from:

ENJOY!!!

The Oregon Adventure continues….

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Every day we explore and find new things to love about Coos Bay, Oregon. We’ve purchased a house, had it inspected and should close on May 14th. We ordered new appliances – washer/dryer, fridge, microwave, and will have them installed on the 18th – we move in on the 19th. Can’t wait.

We found the Coos Bay library and it’s as big or bigger than the one in North Bend. Wow, two great libraries in our area, how lucky can you get? Found the Art Museum and have tried several local restaurants – all good. We’re settling in nicely.

There’s a fabulous city park four blocks from our new digs, so my husband and I went there on Thursday to check it out. There are walking paths, dogs are allowed on leashes and it’s lovely. We walked for a while, greeted and were greeted by many people. This has to be the friendliest place on earth. In the middle of the park is a Japanese garden! There’s a little lake and stream, and a red, Japanese-style bridge across the water with a small waterfall. The obligatory ducks, geese and sea gulls are everywhere. I have to tell you, the garden itself is one of the most beautiful places I’ve even seen. The flowers and landscaping are pristine and literally take one’s breath away. The sun was out all day which only served to make the whole experience all that much better! We will definitely take the dogs for walks there – but not from the house! It may only be four blocks but it’s all downhill – which means at the end of our long walk we will have to go UP hill! I think we’ll just drive down.

Today we decided to walk the critters on the sand dunes instead of in the forest. Dukie, my 110 lb. yellow lab had a ball! He’s used to running daily at the leash-free park near our home in San Diego and I’m sure he missed it. He chased sticks, played with his sister, Tara and generally had a wee of a time.  When the dogs were finally worn out, we started to walk back two blocks to our rental and saw signs posted that there had been a cougar sighted near the dunes, three weeks ago! Now, there are houses all over the place. We’re not out in the country but there are trees everywhere, so I guess that’s where the cougar must live. Sure glad we didn’t see it – Dukie would have wanted to PLAY!!!!!

When we got home, my hubby noticed his cell phone was missing! Oy, we looked everywhere and finally drove back to the dunes to see if he might have dropped it during our walk. I stayed in the car while he searched around for it. I happened to look up to the top of the dunes and saw….five deer! Yup, a hole herd. Their little heads popped up, one by one and then they cautiously started down a path single file. They munched and wandered while I watched. I was hoping my husband would get back to the car before the deer disappeared but he didn’t make it. We both crossed the dunes – quietly and carefully, hoping to see them again, but the small herd had vanished into the forest. What a wonderful treat for me!

And, no – we haven’t found his cell yet!

I’ve moved to Coos Bay, Oregon!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Sorry for the incredible delay in adding to my blog but…my husband and I sold our home in San Diego and moved to Coos Bay, Oregon! As my hubby often says, you have to do something bizarre at least once in your life! This has to be our four or fifth bizarre and so far it’s been great!

Coos Bay is a small town of about 35,000 located on the southern coast of Oregon. It has everything a person could want; an airport, a mall, a hospital, great libraries, live theater, many fine restaurants, a small community college – what else could a person need? Best of all there are trees all over the place! We’ve only been here for a little over two weeks and have already seen deer three times. Today we saw two!  Now, we’re renting a house in the city so I was amazed to see deer just standing there looking magnificent. Our rental house is located a half a block from a large forested park in the middle of the city – with three big lakes in the middle! Yes, it’s God’s country.

Never ones to waste time, my husband and I bought a house less than a week after moving here. We saw what we liked, the price was right so we got it. Why wait? We have a two-week escrow, so will be moving before the end of May. Now I have to go out and buy some new appliances for the place – what fun.

This past weekend we went to a art and wine tasting festival at the mall. There were eight wineries there and for a mere $5.00, you could taste wine from all of them – all you wanted. We really enjoyed ourselves and met many nice people and several dogs. Yup, the mall let’s you bring your dog inside. Gotta love Oregon. After a wee nap (too much tasting?) we went to a new Japanese restaurant in town. It was as good or better than any we tried in San Diego and we will certainly go back again – and soon.

Yesterday found us in the car with our two HUGE yellow Labs, driving down the coast a ways to a state park. There’s a wild life refuge with many, many seals and sea lions basking on the rocks. You can see them very well and certainly hear them barking! It’s a fun place to go and during certain times of the year, you an see whales pass by.  We were amazed to see people swimming in the ocean, too! They are certainly hardier than me. Last week it hailed here – twice.

So, that’s my story and the beginning of a new adventure for me. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you all about it.
